I am a mixed media artist, writer, encourager, creative soul and child of God!. I love using texture and colour within my work. I know that art can have a healing effect on our health and well-being and my interests lie in the use of art, texture and colour and how we can use it for creative expression. I have worked within the health, community and corporate setting, I have exhibited in the UK, both solo and group and online work.
I don't like being tied down to making one particular thing I produce paintings, prints, cards, jewellry, altered books, journals and craft items and whatever else sparks my creative juices! but essentially you will find mixed media at the core of every thing I do. I have more recently been working collages, poetry, book and altered art. As an Artist, I am keen to explore how art and creativity can be used in different settings, and how we use creative expression as a means of communication.
I am a self-taught artist and have been painting for over 20 years, whilst combining a career in the public sector, including design, education and more recently health. I recieved by BSc (Hons) in Compliementary Therapy in 2001, specialising in holistic massage therapy.
Realityarts – Creativity for Change
Realityarts is an extension of the work that I do within art, creativity and health, looking at ways in which we can use and enhance the creative process and the development of art and creative resources.
Dementia and Creativity
I have worked widely in the field of dementia in the elderly and run art and massage workshops to enable participants to connect to that creative part within that is often locked away. I am interested in research that explores the use and impact of art, colour and creativity on health and well-being and deliver talks on my subject area, for example I delivered ‘Dementia care – connecting through arts’ at the National Patient Environment and the Arts Conference 2010 in London. I have a section of the website looking at some of the work I did with the participants.
Workshops
As a carer to a mother who has dementia, I have seen and experienced first hand the how hard it can be for families to cope and also to try and have some normality in your life. I run workshops specifically aimed at social workers and those who work in the care setting to enable them to understand the role of carers and the impact that dementia can have to their lives. I use a range of creative exercises within the sessions
I also run workshops specifically aimed at carers to enable them to use creativity within their daily life, and to bring about change in the way they respond to their situation enabling them to have creative strategies in dealing with their caring role. If you would like to get in contact with me regarding the workshops, please leave your details on the contact form above.
